    FAQs About Passivhaus Design

What makes a Passivhaus different from other energy efficient homes?

Passivhaus buildings achieve unmatched energy savings through a focus on airtightness, superinsulation, optimised ventilation systems and designed glazing.

If you are interested in learning a bit more detail, you might like to read this journal post.

Can you design a Passivhaus in a traditional style?

Yes! Passivhaus principles can be applied to both contemporary and traditional architectural styles, ensuring that your home blends seamlessly with its surroundings or suits your aesthetic preferences.

    Is building a Passivhaus expensive?

While initial costs can be higher, the long term savings on energy bills and the reduced environmental impact make it a worthwhile investment. The design has to be meticulous and the construction high quality – combined, creating a more resilient building. If you are keen on the Passivhaus methodology, but the cost becomes problematic, the AECB offer an excellent alternative standard. We are also AECB certifiers and would be pleased to discuss this alternative!

I heard that my windows would have to stay closed, is that true?

Nope, not true. In winter, your mechanical ventilation system would pre-warm the incoming air, so there is a benefit to keeping the windows closed. But, you are free to open your windows and leave your doors open whenever you wish!
